Brownshill Dolmen





Mysterious ans majestic, the Brownshill Dolmen has captured the imagination of visitors for centuries. Located 3 km east of Carlow, the capstone of this magnificient megalithic tomb is believed to be the largest in Europe, weighing some 103 tons. Its date of construction has been estimated at between 4,900 and 5,500 years ago and it is thought that religious rites were performed here. Some authorities also suggest that it may have served as a form of border marker.

Situated on the outskirts of Carlow Town, Oak Park is an oasis of tranquility and a popular destination for walkers and joggers. The Park is a mature mixed species woodland of over 120 acres with a predominance of beech, oak, Scots pine, silver fir, larch and sycamore.
